Clinopodium georgianum 'Cleburne' is a 2012 collection of PDN staffer Zac Hill from Cleburne County, Alabama, that differs dramatically from the typical species. We think this deserves at the least, subspecies status. Clinopodium georgianum 'Cleburne' is a non-running shrub mint that forms a 20" tall x 5' mass of woody stems adorned with tiny leaves held tightly against the stem. Starting in mid-September, the stems are enhanced by small, axillary (up to 6 per leaf axil), purple flowers, each with a speckled white throat...very drought tolerant, yet thrives in typical sunny garden conditions. Clinopodium georgianum 'Cleburne' is a great specimen for a splash of fall color in the rock garden.
