Chamaecyparis (False Cypress)

If you like conifers, then you will love chamaecyparis. The diversity in this group of mostly Japanese natives (i.e., Chamaecyparis obtusa and Chamaecyparis pisifera) is truly outstanding. Chamaecyparis prefers full sun, is adaptable to a wide variety soil conditions and is deer resistant. For you low-maintenance gardeners, chamaecyparis is perfect as it may not need pruning if properly sited. Once established, chamaecyparis is quite heat-tolerant, although extended drought is deadly. Due to recent taxonomic changes, you may see some chamaecyparis species listed under other genera such as Cupressus, Xanthocyparis, Cupressocyparis, or Callitropsis. Chamaecyparis obtusa 'Spirited' (Spirited Golden Hinoki Cypress)

This new and hard-to-find introduction from NC's conifer expert, Paul Jones, is a seedling from Chamaecyparis obtusa 'Crippsii'. The foliage best resembles a dwarf golden Chamaecyparis obtusa 'Graciosa' with very dainty lace-like foliage. In our rock garden, this is one of the few dwarf golden chamaecyparis that doesn't foliage-burn. Our 15-year-old specimen of Chamaecyparis 'Spirited' has reached 8' tall x 3' wide.

Chamaecyparis thyoides 'Rubicon' (Red Star White Cedar)

(Chamaecyparis 'Red Star') Chamaecyparis thyoides 'Rubicon' is a unique, juvenile-foliage form of our native white cedar discovered in 1971 by HJ Welch at Tennessee Valley Nursery. Our 15-year-old plants have formed 12' tall x 4' wide cylindrical specimens. In winter, the soft, olive foliage turns a lovely purple. Chamaecyparis 'Rubicon' forms multiple leaders, so it does have a tendency to splay open in areas with heavy, wet snow.
