Ceratostigma (Leadwort, Dwarf Plumbago)

The genus Ceratostigma is fairly small, containing just 8 species of perennial wildflowers that are related to plumbago and limonium. Of the 8 species, Ceratostigma plumbaginoides is a common ornamental plant in colder climates, but doesn't tolerate our hot, humid summers. Other species, like Ceratostigma willmottiana, Ceratostigma griffithii and Ceratostigma minus are not as winter hardy, but perform much better in warmer climates.

Ceratostigma is an easy-to-grow perennial that prefers well-drained, consistently moist soils and full sun. They are also perfect rock garden plants. Ceratostigma will spread to 3' or more. Try growing ceratostigma as a replacement for ivy or other over-used groundcovers... it is particularly nice cascading over a wall or down a hill and as a bonus it attracts butterflies. For all of those northern transplants to the south, who failed growing leadworts in the south, we also had trouble until we discovered Ceratostigma griffithii. After it sailed through 0 degrees F in our severe 1996 winter, we began to propagate this dynamite species. The twiggy spreading growth clothed with dime-sized, round green leaves makes a large spreading mound to 2-3' wide. In late August, Ceratostigma griffithii becomes a mass of rich, pure blue flowers through autumn when the deciduous foliage takes on lovely hues of red and yellow...a favorite of butterflies, especially tiger swallowtails. In warmer climates, Ceratostigma griffithii should stay evergreen.

Ceratostigma willmottianum 'Palmgold' (Desert Skies Blue Plumbago)
Blue and gold together again! This 2001 introduction from Palmstead Nursery in the UK boasts brilliant golden new foliage on the 2' tall upright branches. In midsummer, the golden foliage is highlighted by contrasting cobalt-blue flowers. Although it has survived single digit temperatures, Ceratostigma willmottianum 'Palmgold' can be late to reemerge. Where it isn't winter-hardy, you can still make great use of its vivid colors in summer containers. Ceratostigma 'Palmgold' has been a stalwart in our garden since 2002.

Ceratostigma griffithii 'Snow Flurries' is quite unlike the more common form of Ceratostigma griffithii that we grow. Ceratostigma 'Snow Flurries' is a giant, making an 8' wide x 3' tall clump in just a year. The 5' long arching branches are clothed in small dark green leaves, and finally, starting in late October (NC), as topped with terminal clusters of tiny white flowers.
