Hosta (Hosta)
These natives, mostly to prairies (some in woods) of China, Japan, and Korea, have been grown in America for over 150 years. Currently, there are nearly 5,000 cultivars available in the trade. Of these, probably 500 actually are distinct and garden-worthy. During the last few years, the quality and quantity of new hosta introductions has risen substantially. We continually work with the country's best breeders to evaluate new introductions, and we choose to sell only those we feel represent the very best. For the best performance, hostas prefer light shade to a couple of hours of sun in the morning. The further south you move, the more moisture will be required to grow the size hostas that are prevalent in the North. Good soil preparation is also a key to growing a hosta well. Our plants are all container-grown and are usually multiple-division plants...our price is for an entire container of 1-20 divisions. We do not offer small, recently propagated plants and challenge other nurserymen to do the same. We know you will be pleased with our quality; we hope you will also be pleased with our selection and prices. When hostas are divided under nursery conditions, they often take on immature leaf characteristics including more pointed leaves as well as reduced cupping and corrugation. These leaf forms that are pictured and described will re-develop in one to two growing seasons...don’t be alarmed.

Hosta 'Marilyn Monroe' is a vigorous seedling selection from open pollinated Hosta rupifraga 'Urajiro' seed the late Jim Hawes acquired from Japan. Hosta 'Marilyn Monroe' makes a 2' wide clump, composed of red petioles holding the medium-sized, wavy-edged, grey-green leaves so that you get a good glimpse of the dramatic, waxy-white backs. Hosta 'Mishima Fukurin' (Japan NR)

This small hosta hybrid from Japan has long been one of our favorites, but it is rarely-grown probably because of its unpronounceable name. For inquiring minds, mishima means "three islands" and is a location in Japan, and fukurin means "margined." Hosta 'Mishima Fukurin' resembles a dwarf H. 'Regal Splendor'. The upright petioles support the outfacing green leaves, each bordered with a nice yellow edge. In mid-summer, the 1' tall x 2' wide clumps are topped with 2' tall spikes of dark purple flowers. H. This new sport of H. 'Fragrant Bouquet' is the latest in the series of sports from this great parent...all of which have proven to be top performers. Hosta 'Miss Saigon' boasts a very dark green, glossy leaf surrounded by a nice white margin. In late summer, the clumps are topped with 2' stalks of large, very fragrant, light lavender flowers. This Hideko Gowen hybrid of H. 'Dorothy Benedict' x Hosta montana 'Aureomarginata' makes a large mound to 30" tall x 40" wide. The large, 13" long, medium green leaves are edged in a 2.5" wide, creamy gold border. The magnificent clumps are topped with 2' spikes of light lavender flowers in late spring. Pot size: 3 qt. This Hans Hansen hybrid was developed from a cross of Hosta kikutii 'Ozaki Special' x Hosta 'Blue Jay'. The result was a 1' tall x 30" wide clump of pointed, blue-green leaves surrounded by a 1" yellow border. The clump is topped with 18" scapes of medium lavender flowers in early summer. New crop available 9-4-2008 Finally, one of the most talked-about hostas of the last decade is available. This H. sieboldiana mutation essentially resembles a H. 'Frances Williams' without all of the unsightly blemishes on the golden part of the foliage. The giant, corrugated blue leaves are surrounded by a wide golden margin throughout the season. Hosta 'Orange Marmalade' PP 16,742 (R. Solberg 02)

This mutation of Hosta 'Paul's Glory' emerges with a green center and green edge in spring. Quickly, the center turns to yellow, and as the season progresses, it transforms to parchment white.
