Hosta (Hosta)
These natives, mostly to prairies (some in woods) of China, Japan, and Korea, have been grown in America for over 150 years. Currently, there are nearly 5,000 cultivars available in the trade. Of these, probably 500 actually are distinct and garden-worthy. During the last few years, the quality and quantity of new hosta introductions has risen substantially. We continually work with the country's best breeders to evaluate new introductions, and we choose to sell only those we feel represent the very best. For the best performance, hostas prefer light shade to a couple of hours of sun in the morning. The further south you move, the more moisture will be required to grow the size hostas that are prevalent in the North. Good soil preparation is also a key to growing a hosta well. Our plants are all container-grown and are usually multiple-division plants...our price is for an entire container of 1-20 divisions. We do not offer small, recently propagated plants and challenge other nurserymen to do the same. We know you will be pleased with our quality; we hope you will also be pleased with our selection and prices. When hostas are divided under nursery conditions, they often take on immature leaf characteristics including more pointed leaves as well as reduced cupping and corrugation. These leaf forms that are pictured and described will re-develop in one to two growing seasons...don’t be alarmed.

Hosta 'Fireworks' PP 16,062 (Walters Gardens 01)
Light Shade Zone: 3-8 6" tall Origin: Hybrid
Hosta 'Fireworks' is another plant with a long and sordid past. It occurred as a sport of Hosta 'Loyalist', which was a sport of Hosta 'Patriot', which was a sport of Hosta 'Francee', which was a sport of Hosta 'Fortunei'. This circuitous route has produced a unique dwarf hosta, to 6" tall x 1' wide, composed of narrow green leaves with a white center. H. 'Fireworks' is perfect where a very small eye-catching accent hosta is needed. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #06815

Hosta 'First Frost' (P. Scolnik/B. Solberg 02)
Light Shade Zone: 3-8 16" tall Origin: Hybrid
Web-Only!
This wonderful new hosta is one of the best sports to be discovered from Hosta 'Halcyon'...the reverse pattern of Hosta 'June'. This Patricia Scolnik discovery adds a nice creamy-yellow margin to the attractive blue leaves of the parent. The result is a 3' wide clump of attractive blue leaves with a 1/2" border of creamy yellow that ages to white by season's end. The clumps are topped with 2' tall scapes of light lavender in mid-summer. We think this will become a long-term favorite of hosta growers worldwide. Pot size: 2 qt. (1.892 L) #07213

In mid-August, the clumps are topped with 2' flower spikes of light lavender flowers. I think you will really find this hosta quite unique. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #06582

Hosta 'Gemstone' (T. Avent 05)
Light Shade Zone: 3-9 5" tall Origin: Hybrid
This 1998 cross of Hosta venusta x Hosta 'Dorset Blue' resulted in one of our all-time favorite selections that we christened H. 'Gemstone'. Hosta 'Gemstone' makes a vigorous-growing but small 5" tall x 1' wide clump of narrow H. venusta-like, blue leaves. In midsummer, the clumps are topped with short 10" spikes of lavender flowers. If you like small valuable hostas, add a 'Gemstone' to your garden. This has not been tissue-cultured, so availability is limited. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #05917

Hosta 'Get Nekkid' (T. Avent 06)
Light Shade Zone: 4-8, at least 12" tall Origin: Hybrid    alternate image
(aka: Hosta 95-163) This 1995 cross involved Hosta 'Elvis Lives' and Hosta yingeri 'Treasure Island', resulting in a glossy green, wavy leaf hosta with an amazing floral display. The very shiny leaves form a medium-sized 12" tall x 27" wide clump, topped in June and July with sturdy 30" spikes of spider-like medium lavender flowers. The flowers are actually attractive and because of their sheer number, they continue to open for nearly 6 weeks. Even visitors who didn't like hostas (yes, there are a few) were entranced by the floral display.
Pot size: 2 qt. (1.892 L) #07199

Hosta 'Ginsu Knife' (B. Solberg 02)
Part Sun to Light Shade Zone: 3-9 20" tall Origin: Hybrid
Web-Only!
We have watched this Bob Solberg introduction for years, waiting not-so-patiently for it to finally become available. Hosta 'Ginsu Knife' (H. 'Iron Gate Supreme' x H. 'Green Fountain') is one of the most unique and recognizable hosta introductions in recent memory. The 4' wide clump (plants in the ground are much larger than the registered size) is composed of long, wavy, green leaves with an amazing wide, serrate border which emerges yellow, then ages to white. The stunning clump is topped with white flowers atop 32" tall scapes. Pot size: 2 qt. (1.892 L) #07196

Hosta 'Golden Friendship' (H. Gowen 91)
Light Shade Zone: 3-9 18" tall Origin: Hybrid
Web-Only!
This delightful, gold-leaved hosta makes a 18" tall 3' wide clump (the size is incorrect in Hosta registry) of round, cupped, leathery, golden foliage with a unique, twisty point to the leaves. The heavily-waxed leaves give a white appearance to the back of the foliage. Although the leaves emerge chartreuse green, they brighten to a brilliant golden yellow that holds until frost. In midsummer, the clumps are topped with light lavender flowers...simply one of the best gold leaf hostas we grow. Pot size: 3 qt. (2.83 L) #03022

Hosta 'Grand Slam' (H. Benedict, H. Gowen 90)
Light Shade Zone: 3-8 10" tall Origin: Hybrid
Web-Only!
This introduction from the late Herb Benedict and his friend Hideko Gowen is probably a hybrid with H. pycnophylla or a similar species. The 2' diameter clump is composed of leathery, glossy, dark green leaves. With age, each leaf is edged with very dramatic waving. In early fall, the clump is topped with 20" spikes of lavender flowers. At least this one won't have an asterisk in the record books for "substance" abuse. Pot size: 2 qt. (1.892 L) #05565

Hosta 'Great Expectations' (J. Bond, P. Aden 88)
Part Sun to Light Shade Zone: 3-8 20" tall Origin: Hybrid    alternate image
What can we say that hasn't been said about the most beautiful hosta available today? This sport of H. sieboldiana 'Elegans' from England has a fabulous cream center (emerging gold in early spring), surrounded by a dramatic, wide blue-green edge...sure to brighten any garden. The medium-sized clump, to 30" wide, is topped with near-white flowers in early summer...once you see it you gotta have it! H. 'Great Expectations' needs morning sun or very open shade to grow properly. Pot size: 2 qt. (1.892 L) #00602

Hosta 'Green Jeans' (T. Avent 06)
Light Shade Zone: 3-9 15" tall Origin: Hybrid
Web-Only!
Several years ago, we set about trying to overcome the apomixis in the tetraploid Hosta ventricosa. After trying virtually all known species, we were successful in crossing Hosta ventricosa 'Aureomarginata' x Hosta yingeri. All of the offspring were intermediate between the two parents. In theory, this result is not possible, but the secret is not to let your hostas read books. We selected the best of these to introduce for those interested in breeding and hosta genetics. The attractive 15" tall x 40" wide vigorous clumps are composed of rich green leaves, topped in late July with 30" spikes of dark, spider-like flowers. We will not tissue culture this introduction.
Pot size: 2 qt. (1.892 L) #06603

Hosta 'Guacamole' (B. Solberg 94)
Part Sun to Light Shade Zone: 3-9 18" tall Origin: Hybrid
Web-Only!
H. 'Guacamole' is probably the most exciting new hosta to hit the market in years. This reverse variegated sport of H. 'Fragrant Bouquet' has the same wonderful, giant-sized, near-white fragrant flowers in late summer. The vigorously growing clump, to 4' wide, sports chartreuse-gold foliage with a wide green edge...WOW! Pot size: 3 qt. (2.83 L) #01424

Hosta 'Gypsy Rose' (J. Anderson NR)
Part Sun to Light Shade Zone: 3-9 20" tall Origin: Hybrid
This cute plant was discovered as a mutation of the famed H. 'Striptease'. From our observations, H. 'Gypsy Rose' stays slightly smaller, but most importantly, the center pattern of the leaf is much brighter yellow than in H. 'Striptease', which is more light green. This is a dazzling plant that should be a part of every hosta collection. We expect the plants to reach 30" wide at maturity. Pot size: 2 qt. (1.892 L) #04194
