Helleborus (Christmas or Lenten Rose)
The whole gardening world seems enchanted with these mostly evergreen, woodland winter-flowering perennials. We are offering some very special types this year, including the rare H. x nigercors, H. x ericsmithii, the breeding work of the former Heronswood Nursery, and finally clonal selections of Helleborus x hybridus. Hellebores are easy to grow if you provide improved soil in a lightly shaded woodland-type situation. Hellebores become amazingly drought-tolerant with age and are great under summer-thirsty deciduous trees. Watch for seedlings around your parent plants...you may come up with some great hybrids of your own. |

This has been the star of the hellebore season in our garden since we obtained our original plants in 2001 from hellebore breeder John Dudley of Tasmania...who knew? This vigorous hellebore is adorned in early spring with large, fully double, white flower heads. Even gardeners who claim not to like double flowers marvel at these gems. These double-flowered lenten roses are from the Pine Knot breeding program of Dick and Judith Tyler. These 2-quart plants are all flowering size, but we have not yet seen the flowers to determine which are truly doubles. This new hellebore hybrid (H. x nigercors x H. x ericsmithii) comes from breeder David Tristram of England. The dark burgundy-red petioles hold the glossy, green leaves, each highlighted by silvery veins. In midspring, the clumps are topped with spikes of flowers, which emerge as dark reddish-pink buds, then open white. Thanks to tissue culture, each plant is identical. Helleborus x sternii 'Blackthorn' (Blackthorn Strain Lenten Rose)

We are pleased to offer this exciting strain of hellebores, originally created by Robin and Sue White of England's Blackthorn Nursery with the idea of getting a more compact form of the often gangly H. sternii (H. lividus x H. argutifolius). These upright-growing, dwarf-stalked hellebores have marbled, slaty blue-grey, three-sectioned serrated leaves. Atop the purple stems in mid-winter are clusters of pink flower buds that open to medium-sized pink and green flowers. It has been awarded the prestigious Award of Garden Merit (AGM) by the Royal Horticultural Society.
