This unique gaillardia is another Federally Endangered US native found only in open sunny areas of the East TX pineywoods in Hardin County. It makes a wonderful and easy-to-grow garden plant, forming 2' tall x 3'+ wide clumps which are topped from summer through fall with unique, light pink, pinwheel-type flowers. Endangered plant laws make the propagation and sale of rare plants difficult, so we can't ship this one. Drop by one of our open houses and pick one up. This unusual 2004 introduction is a selection of the amazing TX native Gaillardia aestivalis made by Dawn Stover of the SFA Mast Arboretum in Nacogdoches, TX. Instead of the typical gaillardia flowers, G. 'Grape Sensation' is topped with 2" wide grape flowers from May through October. Having derived from G. aestivalis var. winkleri, G. Gaillardia aristata 'Fanfare' PP 15,892 (Fanfare Blanketflower)

Discovered by Richard Reed in the UK, this hot gaillardia is ready to take the perennial world by storm. I don't usually get excited by gaillardias, but I'll never forget the first time I laid eyes on this beauty...my wife slapped me (just kidding). The compact, 15" tall x 12" wide, well-branched mound is topped from June to August with the most incredible flowers. Each upturned 3" wide flower head looks as if miniature honeysuckle flowers are attached to a central cone. Each floret is red at the base, changing to bright yellow at the flared tips. From Australia's Steve Eggleton comes a new pink gaura that offers even more than flowers, thanks to its beautiful variegated foliage. This sport of G. 'Passionate Pink' sports narrow, green leaves bordered in creamy white. The pink pigment from the flowers also gives the foliage a reddish-pink overlay in full sun. Sometimes, it's just hard to hold down your excitement, and this is surely the case with Gaura 'Pink Cloud'. We have trialed this Loleta Powell hybrid, and it has truly blown away the competition. Borrowing its upright habit from G. 'Dauphin' and color from G. 'Siskiyou Pink', G. 'Pink Cloud' provides a stunning, 30" tall, upright plant that is truly smothered with brilliant pink flowers! Gaura 'Walsnofou' is the latest gaura from the work of UK breeder David Tristam. Despite the really bad cultivar name, G. 'Walsnofou' has been a standout in our trials. G. 'Walsnofou' forms a woody base, making it more reliably perennial that any gaura that we have trialed. 2-year-old specimens form a compact but large clump to 3' tall x 5' wide (including flower spikes). The clumps are topped from May through September with spikes of white, butterfly-shaped flowers. Good drainage is important for all gauras to be reliably perennial. This easy-to-grow and spectacular NC native is also found from IL through LA in low woodlands as well as in bogs. The 24" tall stems are clothed with green linear leaves and are topped in September and October with clusters of closed flowers resembling tiny blue cigars which house the reproductive organs...and we now know how much fun cigars can be! Gentiana septemfida var. lagodechiana (Summer Gentian)

This great gentian from high elevations in the Caucasus Mountains has been one of the few gentians to thrive in our hot, humid summers. G. septemfida var. lagodechiana makes a 8" tall x 15" wide semi-sprawling clump of dark green leaves, highlighted in July and August with open, cobalt-blue, often white-centered flowers. The variety "lagodechiana" hails from Lagodekhi, Georgia, and is shorter than the typical species. G. septemfida prefers an open, well-drained, but slightly moist site. This purple-flowered selection of the South African native (SW Cape to East Cape) G. incanum makes a wonderful textural foil in the summer garden. This true geranium, not to be confused with pelargoniums, makes an open mound to 3' wide of very airy, finely-cut green leaves, which are topped starting in late spring and sporadically through summer with large, lavender purple, saucer-like flowers. If you like Geranium 'Brookside', then you will love Geranium 'Orion'. This hybrid from Holland's Brian Kabbes is the result of a cross between G. himalayense 'Gravetye' and G. 'Brookside'. The result is a non-flopping, heat- and humidity-tolerant clump of deeply cut, green foliage that can reach 30" tall x 3' wide, topped in spring with large, 2.5" intensely blue flowers. Discovered in the damp woods in the wilds of Croatia, this marvelous geranium selection first caught my eye in the garden of friend Dan Hinkley. Each 2' wide clump is adorned with stunning foliage. Each of the 4" wide, textured green leaves is highlighted by a large purple-black circle in the center...a truly fascinating feature. In May-June, the clumps are topped with numerous 2' spikes of strongly-reflexed, dark lavender flowers. If you think Geranium 'Rozanne' and G. 'Jolly Bee' are great, you'll love this purple-flowered form (RHS 80A). The name must be another example of male color-blindness. Netherlands nurseryman Marco van Noort found this mutation in his plants of G. 'Jolly Bee' and subsequently named it G. 'Pink Penny'. Just like its parent, G. 'Pink Penny' makes an 15" tall x 18" wide mound of white-patterned green foliage that is topped from June until frost with 2.5" wide purple flowers, each highlighted with dramatic dark veining. 'Jolly Bee'...although it sure looks lavender to me, albeit with a nice white eye zone. The growth form is a sprawling clump to 2' wide, similar to G. 'Jolly Bee'.

This amazing new geranium has proven to be an outstanding performer...hence, it is one of the only patented hardy geraniums. G. Geranium 'Sandrine' is the latest introduction from French breeder, Thierry Delabroye, (Heuchera 'Caramel'). G. 'Sandrine' is a seedling of G. 'Anne Folkard' (G. procurrens x G. psilostemon), which Theiry named after his wife. The 2" wide rich purple, black-throated flowers are much larger than those of G. 'Anne Folkard' and are set off nicely against the golden yellow foliage, which is brightest in spring. The scrambling nature of G. 'Sandrine' makes it perfect for creating fun color combinations in the perennial border.

This amazing new selection of hardy geranium from Holland's Coen Jansen boasts large, intensely pink flowers, each highlighted by red markings radiating from the center of the flower. Geranium 'Stephanie' arose at the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh from seed sent by the Cambridge University Botanic Garden as G. peloponnesiacum. It was recognized that this seedling was, in fact, a hybrid between the Greek G. peloponnesiacum and the alpine Caucasican species G. renardii. The result was G. 'Stephanie' which produces an 14" tall x 18" wide tight clump of textured, light green, rounded foliage, topped in spring with upturned mauvy blue (RHS 85A/B) flowers...a heavy spring bloomer. Geranium 'Tanya Rendall' comes from Orkney Island gardner Richard Rendall, who named his new introduction after his daughter. G. 'Tanya Rendall' is the result of a menage a trois between G. traversii 'Elegans', G. sessiliflorum, and G. x oxonianum. In growth, 'Tanya Rendall' makes a 6" tall x 18" wide spreading groundcover of olive green leaves, topped with an abundance of 1.5" wide dark carmine-pink flowers, each highlighted by a white eye-zone.
