Crinum (Crinum Lily)
Crinum lilies are a truly classic southern pass-along plant. Crinums have thrived for hundreds of years at abandoned home sites where daffodils have long ago turned up their toes. The giant clumps of bold, tropical lily-like foliage make an imposing architectural statement in the garden. In summer, the clumps are adorned with an array of pink-to-white flower types...usually fragrant. Crinums are extremely adaptable...either in dry or in boggy soils. Think of crinum lilies as a horticultural IRA for your grandkids to remember you by.

Crinum americanum St. Mark's, FL (American Crinum Lily)
Sun to Part Sun Zone: 7-10 20" tall Origin: USA
Web-Only!
This collection of the bog native Crinum americanum hails from just south of Tallahassee, FL, and has thrived in our garden for many years. The glossy, dark green hippeastrum-like foliage forms 2' wide clumps that multiply from short underground runners. In late summer, the clumps are topped with 2' tall spikes, ending in clusters of large, fragrant, white, star-shaped flowers. We have found this very easy to grow in our moist bog and not difficult to flower as some have written. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #06038

Crinum 'Bradley' (Crinum Lily)
Sun to Part Sun Zone: 7-10, at least 24" tall Origin: Hybrid
From the late H.B. Bradley of Australia comes this deep-wine flowered crinum with large open-faced flowers. This hybrid (probably C. scabrum x flaccidum) boasts much narrower, glossy, green foliage than the powellii hybrids, eventually making a 2' tall x 3' wide clump. Each 2' tall scape is topped in summer with a dozen wine-colored, very fragrant flowers...superb! Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #03042

Crinum bulbispermum 'Sacramento' (Crinum Lily)
Sun Zone: 6-10 36" tall Origin: Hybrid
Web-Only!
Crinum 'Sacramento' has a mysterious background, but is reportedly a Les Hannibal cross between two forms of C. bulbispermum, one of which originated in the town of Kimberly, South Africa. C. bulbispermum 'Sacramento' makes an often solitary, 3' wide clump of arching blue-green foliage topped, starting in late spring, with 3' tall stalks of flowers that have particularly nice red-and-white striped anise-fragrance flowers. Since C. 'Sacramento' rarely offsets, it is produced only as seedlings which come true to type. For us, it is the earliest crinum to flower, often producing the first scape in late April in NC. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #03141

Crinum 'Claude Davis' (Claude Davis Crinum Lily)
Sun Zone: 7-10, possibly colder 30" tall Origin: Hybrid
Crinum 'Claude Davis' is a selection from Louisiana nurseryman Claude Davis, and was reportedly a seedling of C. 'Cape Dawn'...we concur. The glossy green foliage forms a nice offsetting clump, topped starting in early June with 30" tall spikes of horizontal-facing, maroon-pink flowers...a most unusual shade of pink. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #06770

Crinum 'Ellen Bosanquet' (Crinum Lily)
Sun to Part Sun Zone: 6b-10 24" tall Origin: Hybrid
This is still considered one of the finest crinum lilies for the home garden. This vigorously multiplying hybrid (possibly C. 'JC Harvey' x C. scabrum) was hybridized in FL during the 1920s by Louis Bosanquet and named after his wife. C. 'Ellen Bosanquet' begins flowering in mid-June and continues through most of the summer. The large, reddish-purple flowers, on 2' stalks, emit a delightful spicy fragrance. The rosette of wavy, glossy, tropical-looking foliage is a great addition to the garden, even without the flowers. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #02193

Crinum 'Emma Jones' (Crinum Lily)
Sun to Part Sun Zone: 7-10 30" tall Origin: Hybrid
Web-Only!
This old Thad Howard-named hybrid from the TX garden of Fred Jones is a cross between C. 'Peachblow' and C. 'Cecil Houdyshel'. Like the arms of a giant octopus, the glossy green, 3' long x 3" wide, strap-shaped leaves arch out and downward from the giant bulb. This bold mound of foliage is softened, beginning in mid-June, with 4' stalks, each topped with up to a dozen deliciously fragrant, 7" long x 3" wide, purplish pink flowers (RHS 62B). In windy areas, the giant flower stalks may need support groups. Actually, make that regular supports for the crinum...my wife says the support groups are what I need. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #03041

Crinum erubescens (Swamp Lily)
Sun to Part Sun Zone: 7-10, at least 30" tall Origin: S. America
Web-Only!
One of the classic pass-along plants of the deep South is Crinum erubescens...the South American equivalent of our native (and much more difficult to grow) C. americanum. The wide, glossy green leaves, to 30" long, form a large clump that actually spreads about by means of a large, underground rhizome. In moist soil, C. erubescens will make a large colony, while it is more restrained in normal garden soil. The clumps are topped with 3' tall red stalks of sweetly scented, spidery white flowers that continue all summer, from July to frost. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #03582

Crinum 'Hannibal's Dwarf' (Hannibal's Dwarf Crinum Lily)
Sun to Part Sun Zone: 7-9, at least 18" tall Origin: Hybrid
Web-Only!
Once again we are able to offer the wonderful Les Hannibal dwarf crinum. This cross of C. moorei x C. americanum is the fastest-multiplying crinum that we have ever seen. The glossy, green, strap-like leaves remain attractive all season, unlike those of some of the hybrids. In our area, expect a heavy flowering show of large, deep pink flowers, held 1' above the foliage in midsummer, followed by a rebloom in early fall...a great plant for smaller gardens! Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #02799

Crinum 'Sangria' (Sangria Crinum Lily)
Sun to Part Sun Zone: 7-10 24" tall Origin: Hybrid
This much sought-after crinum lily originated in 1983 as a cross of C. procerum 'Splendens' x an unknown C. bulbispermum (or hybrid). It was discovered as a seedling in the garden of the late Marcia Clint Wilson by Texan Scott Ogden. The dark purple reflexed foliage makes a dramatic clump, topped in late spring and again in fall with 18" spikes of rosy pink flowers. Because of its C. bulbispermum parentage, C. 'Sangria' is much more winter hardy than other purple leaf crinums. Most of the material that is sold as C. 'Sangria' is simply C. procerum 'Splendens'. Thanks to Scott Ogden for providing us propagation stock from the original plant. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #04188

Crinum 'Stars and Stripes' (Crinum Lily)
Sun to Part Sun Zone: 7b-10 24" tall Origin: Hybrid
C. 'Stars and Stripes' is a 1977 Thad Howard introduction that makes a compact clump to 20" tall. The narrow, pleated foliage on this C. scabrum x C. erubescens hybrid gives rise to sturdy 24" stalks of stunning late summer flowers with white petals and dramatic red stripes down the center. In appearance, it resembles C. scabrum, but with a good bit more hardiness. For overall star power, this is one of the best crinums that we have grown. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #03046

Crinum 'Summer Nocturne' (Crinum Lily)
Sun Zone: 7-10 24" tall Origin: Hybrid
This vigorous and heavy-flowering Thad Howard cross of C. moorei and C. erubescens has become one of our favorite crinums. The 2' tall, purple flower spikes arise from among the lush green foliage starting in mid-July and continuing until frost. Each spike produces 5-6 large, widely open, pale pink flowers that darken toward the end of the petals. Each flower boasts a phenomenal sweet fragrance that perfumes for quite a distance around the clump...AMAZING! Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #05075

Crinum 'White Queen' (White Queen Crinum Lily)
Sun Zone: 7-10, at least 36" tall Origin: Hybrid
Thanks to Scott Ogden for sharing this wonderful Luther Burbank hybrid, which he described as "arguably the most lovely crinum ever bred." We've finally got it propagated so we can spread this plant far and wide. C. 'White Queen' is a cross of C. x powellii 'Alba' and C. macowanii, which should give it very good hardiness...probably into zone 6. The very long, wide leaves make an imposing, but slowly offsetting, clump topped in late spring with 3' tall spikes of large, pure white bells that emerge sideways then become pendent. If you've been looking for a "white queen" to live in your garden, we can help. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #06001
