Brugmansia (Angel Trumpet)
These highly poisonous (just like the foliage of tomatoes) members of the Solanacae family from South America have long been prized for their huge, fragrant pendent flowers. They are often confused with members of the genus Datura, whose flowers are up-facing. We have found several hybrids that are winter-hardy in our climate (well-established, well-drained, and well-mulched). If you live further north, they make amazing tender perennial specimens in large containers. Containerized angel trumpets can be cut to the ground for winter, or if you are short on space, 1' long sections of the trunk can be saved in slightly moist peat moss for the upcoming season. Again, if you need a snack, do not munch on the foliage of your angel trumpets! |
Brugmansia 'Charles Grimaldi' (Angel Trumpet)

This pass-along hybrid still rates at the top of the list of great angel trumpets. B. 'Charles Grimaldi' is a vigorous grower reaching 8' tall by the end of each growing season. Starting in late summer and continuing into the fall, the plant is laden with up to 100 huge, 12" long, golden-orange pendent flowers. Did I mention that in the late afternoon and evening the flowers are deliciously fragrant? Brugmansia 'Cherub' (Cherub Angel Trumpet)

I've grown many angel trumpet selections over the years, but none have blown me away like Brugmansia 'Cherub'. B. 'Cherub' is the first out of the ground in spring, the most vigorous, and by far, the most floriferous. This seedling of B. 'Ecuador Pink' was hybridized by Dr. Jim Alston of Park Seed. The 7' tall stalk jumps out of the ground in spring, adorned by long dark green leaves. Starting in late summer (NC), the top of the clumps are adorned with hundreds of large, dangling salmon-pink trumpets....exceedingly fragrant in the afternoon and evening...simply superb! Brugmansia 'Miner's Claim' PP 15,747 (Miner's Claim Angel Trumpet)

This awesome angel trumpet comes from California's Keith Miner, who discovered it in 1999 as a mutation in a block of B. 'Frosty Pink' at Monterrey Bay Nursery. The bold green leaves are each bordered with a 1"+ bright creamy yellow edge. The stunning 5' tall clump is laden in early summer, then again in the fall, with hundreds (when mature) of large, pendent, fleshy-pink, nocturnally fragrant flowers. This baby is hotter than a $50 whore in downtown New Orleans...in August. Unlike the aforementioned, this one is mostly legal...unless you try to smoke it or propagate it.

Brugmansia 'Snowbank' PP 14,817 (Variegated Angel Trumpet)

Oh, my! Every now and then a new plant comes along that is so stunning that it makes you fall to your knees and weep. Actually, I do that when I back into them, but that's another matter. This Terra Nova introduction is a tetraploid version of the popular B. 'Sunray'. The huge, tricolor leaves are dark green in the center, with narrow blotches of light grey-green toward the edge, surrounded by a 1" wide creamy white border. We are thrilled to bring you one of the finest perennials for those in Zones 7 and 8, a fine shrub for those from Zone 9 south, and a great container plant for those of you in the arctic zones north of Zone 7. Brugmansias have long been prized for their stunning flowers, but now we can add variegated foliage to the mix. Brugmansia x candida is a naturally-occurring hybrid of two Ecuadorian species, B. aurea x B. versicolor. B. x candida 'Double White' has proven to be an exceptional grower for us, topping out at 8' tall by year's end. On rare occasions a new plant comes along that has the "WOW" factor, and we are pleased to present one of those: Brunnera 'Jack Frost'. This stunning Walters Garden discovery...a sport of B. 'Langtrees'...makes a brilliant 18" wide clump of round, frosty silver leaves. Each leaf is highlighted by a dramatic green border, as well as narrow green vein lines running through the solid silver leaf. Buddleia (Butterfly Bush)
We strive to offer a good selection (more on-line) of distinctly different buddleias available for the Southeast. We are currently evaluating many new potential introductions. Unlike the species that require no pruning, most hybrids have tops that outgrow their root systems and lodge over. We recommend that these be cut to the ground each spring for the best effect...they regrow fast and will offer a full summer of color. The only pests we have noticed are spider mites, which seem to occur only when the plants are under stress...certainly not in our garden! Butterfly bushes require bright full sun to perform satisfactorily. We like to use buddleias near a path, where the honey fragrance of the blooms is evident as we stroll by. |

This hot new buddleia is a seedling from UGA's guru of woody plants, Dr. Mike Dirr. The plant was eventually named by Ted Stephens of Nurseries Caroliniana. Buddleia 'Attraction' is the closest to red that we have seen in buddleia flowers and light years ahead of B. 'Royal Red'. Buddleia davidii 'Evil Ways' (Evil Ways Butterfly Bush)

This stunning Sean Hogan introduction is a bright yellow foliaged butterfly bush that originated at Sean's nursery as a seedling, probably from Buddleia 'Santana'. B. Buddleia lindleyana (Butterfly Bush)

This little-known Chinese species has shiny green leaves, cinnamon trunks, and graceful 2' long pendulous panicles of medium lavender flowers in summer. Our clone of B. lindleyana came from giant 30' tall specimens in the Bolivia, NC, garden of the late Francis Marion Galloway, where they have grown since the 1860s. B. lindleyana is our only buddleia that is not cut to the ground each year. We have limbed up our specimen as a walk-underneath feature...a truly spectacular species which deserves much wider use. This hybrid of B. fallowiana x davidii seems to be everyone's favorite.
