Zephyranthes (Rain Lily)
We are fascinated with the wonderful group of zephyranthes(rain lilies). Rain lilies are unobtrusive summer-flowering small bulbs that can fit in virtually any landscape. The flower range is from yellow to white to pink. The great thing about rain lilies is the lack of large foliage that accompanies many of the spring-flowering bulbs. There are rain lilies that grow in conditions from bogs to deserts, with most having an incredible tolerance to heat. We were pleased that our butterflies find these a wonderful nectar source in the summer months. We are very pleased to continue expanding our rain lily selection with many of the hard-to-find Mexican species, many older US hybrids, and the groundbreaking new work from Fadjar Marta of Indonesia. |
Zephyranthes 'Krakatau' (Krakatau Rain Lily)

(aka: Z. FM #01) This new floriferous rain lily from Fadjar Marta's breeding erupts into flower starting in mid-July and continues all summer with 10" tall spikes, ending in a 2" wide cupped flower of bright reddish-orange. Each flower is further highlighted with a bright yellow central pattern. The second day, the flowers change to a peachy color. You'll find Z. 'Krakatau' worthy of its explosive namesake. Zephyranthes 'Labuffarosea' (Labuffarosea Rain Lily)

This naturally-occurring hybrid rain lily was discovered by Yucca Do Nursery in 1990 at 4,000' in Tamaulipas, Mexico. This incredibly prolific flowering rain lily is smothered with beautiful 2-4" wide, clear pink-to-white with pink blush (color of seedlings varies) flowers from midsummer through early fall. Zephyranthes 'Lily Pies' (Lily Pies Rain Lily)

This splendid new rain lily is a Yucca Do clonal selection from their original Z. 'Labuffarosea' seed strain. Z. 'Lily Pies' makes a thick clump of glossy green basal foliage topped, starting in midsummer, with a dramatic floral show after each rain shower. The 5" flower spikes are topped with wide overlapping petals that are pure white toward the center of the flower, morphing to dark pink at the tip of each petal. Zephyranthes 'Lydia Luckman' (Lydia Luckman Rain Lily)

(aka: Z. FM #06) Z. 'Lydia Luckman'...what a breakthrough! Actually, I don't know if Lydia is a breakthrough, but she is a lifelong friend of Indonesian rain lily breeder Fadjar Marta. Her vigorous namesake produces amazing 3" flowers that have a base color of peachy orange (RHS 37C). Each petal is highlighted by a wide, central yellow stripe. The second day, the flower changes to light pink with a white central stripe. For us, this prolific flowering selection starts around late June...rain permitting. Zephyranthes macrosiphon (Pink Rain Lily)

This Mexican species is quite similar to Z. grandiflora, except that the flower is slightly smaller (only 2-3", compared to 3-4" for Z. grandiflora, and the stigma is shorter than the anthers). The short, flat green foliage is hardly noticed until summer, when the clumps burst forth with 10" tall stems topped with wide, open, rich rosy flowers. Zephyranthes mesochloa (Rain Lily)

(syn: Z. commersoniana) This widespread South American species is rarely grown, probably because many reference books claim it is quite tender. This is another reason not to let your plants read books. Z. mesochloa has been fine in our trials since 2003. In habit, it resembles a dwarf Z. candida that flowers in midsummer. Zephyranthes morrisclintii Redneck Romance Strain (Redneck Romance Rain Lily)

From our 1994 Mexican expedition, we planted two different rain lilies, Z. drummondii and Z. lindleyana, side by side. Since most rain lilies don't like each other enough to have sex, we figured we were safe. We figured wrong. I guess out here in the country even a rain lily gets lonely at night, and son-of-a-gun, do we have some babies. In effect, we recreated the species Z. morrisclintii. The offspring are remarkably similar to each other, with the flat foliage of Z. drummondii topped with a light pink, cup-shaped flower from Z. lindleyana. The flowering season starts in April, making it one of the earliest rain lilies to flower. Zephyranthes 'Moulin Rouge' (Moulin Rouge Rain Lily)

(aka: Z. FM #82) To our knowledge, Z. 'Moulin Rouge' is the first commercially available semi-double rain lily. From Indonesia's Fadjar Marta comes this unusual rain lily that starts flowering for us in mid-June with 2.5" wide, rosy-rouge, pastel flowers, each with eight petals instead of the normal six. Z. 'Pink Panther' is a splendid new selection that we made from seed-grown batches of Z. 'Labuffarosea'. We planted batches of seedlings around our garden, and this is the seedling that consistently made visitors drool. This clone boasts large, solid-pink, up-facing flowers on tall 10" stems. For us, Z. We were amazed to find these spectacular rain lilies growing in the highway medians near Refugio, Texas, on the east coast of that state. The glossy green leaves serve as a nice foil to the bright yellow flowers that are held just atop the foliage. The vigorously multiplying clumps flower for us from late summer into fall. Zephyranthes reginae (Valles Yellow Rain Lily)

The common name originated from the location where the bulbs were found by plantsman Thad Howard in 1954 near the town of Valles, San Luis Potosi in eastern Mexico. From July until frost, the small tufts of narrow green foliage are a backdrop to dozens of bright lemon-yellow, silver dollar-sized flowers. This fast-multiplying clump will make a show-stopper in quick order. Z. reginae grows best in moist light shade, although ours perform well in our dry, sunny, roadside scree garden...fabulous! (aka: Z. FM #09) Zephyranthes 'South Pacific' is another in the recent releases from rain lily breeder Fadjar Marta of Indonesia. Z. 'South Pacific' begins flowering for us in mid-June with 2.5" wide flowers of strong pink. Zingiber mioga 'Silver Arrow' (Silver Arrow Hardy Ginger)

Although we can't find anything silver about Zingiber 'Silver Arrow', it's been a great garden plant in our trials. From part sun to light shade, Zingiber mioga 'Silver Arrow' produces a patch of 3' tall stalks, each lined with 1' long x 3" wide leaves, emerging parchment gold and becoming flecked green with a delicious butterscotch frosting. This is a vigorous grower, producing a 5' wide tropical-looking patch in 5 years in good rich soil. The yellow orchid-like flowers magically appear at ground level starting in late summer.

Zingiber mioga 'White Feather' (White Feather Ginger)

Zingiber mioga 'White Feather' is the reverse variegated form of Z. 'Dancing Crane". The 3' tall spikes emerge in late spring, adorned with 1' long x 2.5 wide green leaves, edged in creamy yellow that fades to creamy white. Expect a 5' wide patch in five years when growing in rich organic soils. Once the plants are established, they produce light yellow, orchid-like flowers at ground level in late summer and into fall. If you get hungry in the garden, they can be prepared as the perfect snack.
