Zantedeschia (Calla Lily)
We are pleased to make available some of the lesser-known Zantedeschia aethiopica cultivars, which are hardy and make superb garden plants. These are very different in growth habit from their more colorful flowered cousins, which are derived from distantly related species. Z. aethiopica adds a tropical appearance to the garden with an ironclad constitution...even down to temperatures below 0 degrees F. Although they thrive best in moist, rich sites, callas are amazingly durable under less than ideal conditions. We think you will really enjoy some of the selections that we have chosen to include.
Zantedeschia aethiopica 'White Giant' (White Giant Calla Lily)

Zantedeschia aethiopica 'White Giant' (White Giant Calla Lily)

Sun to Part SunZone: 7-10 80" tall Origin: S. Africa
We first saw this giant calla at the CA garden of plantsman/garden writer Sonny Garcia and were literally blown away. Lining the walkway were these giant, green-and-white speckled-leaf Z. aethiopica callas, whose foliage topped out at waist high. The even more amazing part was the 7' tall flower stems that towered above my head. The flower is the classic, large, creamy white cup that is typical of the species...except that this selection has been doing some really good steroids. We are thrilled to be able to share this superb find with gardeners everywhere...thanks, Sonny! Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #03695

(aka: Z. 'Black Star') This fabulous new zantedeschia was discovered as a mutation on Z. 'Schwarzwalder' by Frank Patterson in West Linn, OR. The green leaves are highlighted by small, white spots and a unique, black-purple leaf edge. In July, the clumps are topped with dark, black-purple flowers...simply amazing and a great addition to the black garden. As with all hybrid zantedeschia, they do not emerge until mid-May, so be patient. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #06321

Zantedeschia 'Picasso' PP 15,282 (Picasso Calla Lily)

SunZone: 7-10, at least 30" tall Origin: Hybrid
NEW! We just love this amazing breakthrough in calla lily breeding from Holland's Cecilius Jan-Jochem Randag. Zantedeschia 'Picasso' is a robust grower, forming a 30" tall x 18" wide clump of large white-spotted arrow-shaped leaves. The clump is topped, starting in late May (NC) and continuing well through the summer, with up to two dozen 30" spikes, each ending in a vaaaze-shaped inflorescence of purple with a wide white lip...almost too sexy for our garden. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #08324

This is probably the first offering of the rare bigeneric cross of Zephyranthes 'Labuffarosea' x Habranthus robustus. Z. 'Norma Pearl' was created by rain lily guru Paul Niemi and named after his mother. The fast-multiplying bulbs form a robust clump of thick grey-green leaves, topped throughout most of the summer by 3" wide, nearly pure white flowers that are intermediate between both parents. Zephyranthes (Rain Lily)
We are fascinated with the wonderful group of zephyranthes(rain lilies). Rain lilies are unobtrusive summer-flowering small bulbs that can fit in virtually any landscape. The flower range is from yellow to white to pink. The great thing about rain lilies is the lack of large foliage that accompanies many of the spring-flowering bulbs. There are rain lilies that grow in conditions from bogs to deserts, with most having an incredible tolerance to heat. We were pleased that our butterflies find these a wonderful nectar source in the summer months. We are very pleased to continue expanding our rain lily selection with many of the hard-to-find Mexican species, many older US hybrids, and the groundbreaking new work from Fadjar Marta of Indonesia.

Web-Only! This fabulous Thad Howard hybrid of Z. 'Ruth Page' x Z. pulchella is one of the most unique rain lilies we grow. The glossy green foliage is topped, starting in late summer, with 6" tall spikes of 1.5" - 2" rounded flowers that open the first day as a lovely peachy apricot. The second day, the flowers change to a scrumptious peach sherbert orange. This reliable rain lily has quickly become one of our favorites. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #05393

Zephyranthes 'Bangkok Yellow' (Rain Lily)

Zephyranthes 'Bangkok Yellow' (Rain Lily)

SunZone: 7b-10 8" tall Origin: Hybrid
Web-Only! Our original bulb was purchased from the Bangkok market by plantsman Alan Galloway. We first thought it was the old hybrid Z. 'Ajax', but this clone differed slightly in color from the Z. 'Ajax' in our reference collection; hence, we use the moniker 'Bangkok Yellow'. This is almost certainly another hybrid of Z. citrina x Z. candida because of the typical short, round, upright green leaves of Z. candida. When it begins flowering in late summer, the clumps are topped with Z. candida-sized flowers that open a nice yellow and change to a lighter yellow the second day. It has performed very well in our garden trials. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #05156

Zephyranthes 'Big Dude' (Big Dude Rain Lily)

Zephyranthes 'Big Dude' (Big Dude Rain Lily)

Sun to Part SunZone: 7-10 6" tall Origin: Mexico
Zephyranthes 'Big Dude' is one of our selections from the seed strain Z. 'Labuffarosea'. We were looking for a selection with large flowers and a fast-multiplying habit, and this is the result. Each flower can reach an amazing 4" in width. The large, white petals are tipped with a faint blush of pink on the tips. This easy-to-grow rain lily is amazing when the entire clump bursts into flower after a rain. For us, flowering starts in early summer and continues until frost. Zephyranthes candida (Rain Lily)

Zephyranthes candida (Rain Lily)

Sun to Light ShadeZone: 7-10 12" tall Origin: S. America    alternate image
Web-Only! This wonderful, semi-evergreen rain lily just can't be beaten for an easy-to-grow garden performer. The round, narrow, dark green foliage makes a thick clump. Beginning in summer, 1" tall, pure white, star-like flowers with dramatic golden stamens (pollen holders) arise just above the foliage. Z. candida makes a great specimen clump but, when used in a mass or for a border, it is simply indescribable! Although quite durable, Z. candida performs best in a rich or very moist site. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #01183

SunZone: 7-10 10" tall Origin: Central America
Web-Only! (aka: Z. sulphurea) This native to the Yucatan Peninsula is another of the commonly seen rain lilies in Deep South gardens, especially around TX. This tough rain lily tolerates truly crappy soils, floods, droughts, and just about anything nature can throw its way. The very narrow, grass-like foliage is topped with 8-10" tall stems of small, bright yellow, goblet-shaped flowers from midsummer, although best flowering for us occurs from the late summer months to early fall.
