Lilium (Lily)
Our goal is to offer only the hard-to-find species and selections of lilies that will probably never grace the pages of the Dutch catalogs, alongside those truly gaudy Asiatic hybrids. Since these lilies are not in mass production, the prices reflect their rarity and production time. All lilies are of flowering size.
Lilium brownii 'Sichuan Splendor' (Brown's Lily)

Lilium brownii 'Sichuan Splendor' (Brown's Lily)

Sun to Part SunZone: 5b-9, at least 60" tall Origin: China
We are very excited about this 2001 recollection of the Chinese Lilium brownii by Duke Garden's Paul Jones from 6,700' elevation near Juizhaigou in Sichuan Province, where it grows on exposed sun-baked cliffs. This species was named after F.E. Brown of the UK, who first flowered the plant in cultivation. Our plants reach a dramatic height of 5', topped in early summer with clusters of 12-17 huge, fragrant white trumpets with purple staining on the buds that remains on the outside of the open petals. This has proven to be a great lily for baking hot climates. Our plants are seed-grown. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #06616

Lilium formosanum (Formosa Lily)

Lilium formosanum (Formosa Lily)

SunZone: 5-8 84" tall Origin: Asia    alternate image
Virtually every year, this is one of our top selling plants! What would you expect from a lily that enjoys heat, flowers the first year from seed, and eventually reaches 7'+ tall with a dozen or more 10" long, sweetly fragrant, pure white flowers in early August? After the flowers fade, the old seed stalks turn upward, making a classy candelabra that dries atop the stalk for a great winter ornament in the garden or to use in dried arrangements. I can't say enough good things about this easy-to-grow gem! Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #01356

Lilium 'Fort Knox' (Fort Knox Martagon Lily)

Lilium 'Fort Knox' (Fort Knox Martagon Lily)

Sun to Light ShadeZone: 3-7 48" tall Origin: Hybrid
We are pleased to introduce this new Hans Hansen bred Martagon lily (a L. hansonii hybrid) which has performed very well in our heat and humidity trials. H. 'Fort Knox' produces 4' tall flowering stalks of whorled green leaves, topped in late May and early June with 9-12 pendent golden-orange (RHS 23A) flowers, each highlighted by a small green center and darker purple spots toward the throat. Quantities are very limited. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #08066

Lilium henryi (Henry's Lily)

Lilium henryi (Henry's Lily)

Sun to Part SunZone: 5-8, at least 60" tall Origin: China
Open House/Web-Only! The indestructible Lilium henryi was introduced to western cultivation in the late 1800's by plant explorer Augustine Henry, from plants he collected on limestone cliffs in China's Hubei Province. L. henryi has long been one of our favorite of the Chinese lilies, producing 5' tall stalks, topped in August with dozens of pendent, medium-orange, recurved 3" flowers, each in need of a shave. The stems of L. henryi lean like a good drunk. While they are sturdy enough not to fall, they enjoy having a stout companion to lean on. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #07108

Lilium lancifolium 'Florepleno' (Double Flower Tiger Lily)

Lilium lancifolium 'Florepleno' (Double Flower Tiger Lily)

SunZone: 4-9 80" tall Origin: China, Japan, Korea
Open House/Web-Only! (syn: L. tigrinum) We are very excited to be able to offer the very cool and hard-to-find double form of this great pass-along plant. The sturdy 6-7' tall stately stalks are topped with clusters of fascinating large, double-petaled, reddish orange flowers in late August and September. Each stalk bears small black bulbils in the leaf axils that can be used to reproduce the plant. Its scarcity is no doubt due to the Lily Society snobs. In the book, "Lilies, a Guide for Growers and Collectors," Edward McRae writes, "The double flowered variety 'Florepleno' is unattractive in the eyes of most gardeners, indeed, almost grotesque." I say that beauty can only be in the eyes of the beholder if the upturned nose is first removed. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #04825

Lilium leichtlinii var. maximowiczii (Lesser Tiger Lily)

Lilium leichtlinii var. maximowiczii (Lesser Tiger Lily)

Sun to Part SunZone: 4-8, at least 72" tall Origin: China, Korea
Open House/Web-Only! This little-known cousin of the more common Lilium lancifolium makes a similar 6' tall stalk, adorned with large, dangling, bright orange flowers, each specked with dark brown. Where it differs is that it does not produce bulbils, which can become pesky if you don't have enough gardening friends. For us, it flowers in late September, when most other lilies have long gone. In the wild, it prefers moist soils, but is very drought tolerant. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #06205

Lilium leucanthum coll. #03CH064 (White Chinese Lily)

Lilium leucanthum coll. #03CH064 (White Chinese Lily)

SunZone: 7-9, at least 48" tall Origin: China
Open House/Web-Only! This Chinese species hails from the Chinese provinces of Gansu and Hubei, and now Sichuan. The 3-4' tall stalks are topped in mid-June (NC) with 1-4 large white flowers, each tinged lavender on the outside and highlighted inside by a prominent yellow throat and bright orange pollen. These plants don't quite match either of the known varieties. Our offering represents a 2003 wild seed collection from Sichuan by Minnesota lily breeder Hans Hansen. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #07111

Lilium michiganense (Michigan Lily)

Lilium michiganense (Michigan Lily)

Part Sun to Light ShadeZone: 4-8, at least 72" tall Origin: USA
Open House/Web-Only! Lilium michiganense is another of the wonderful US native lilies that are rarely available to home gardeners. Native to moist slopes and low woods from Minnesota south to Alabama, this vigorous and easy-to-grow lily spreads nicely by underground rhizomes. In spring, the 6' tall stems of whorled leaves shoot skyward. In June/July, the stems are topped with one or two bright orange-red, pendent flowers changing to yellow with orange-brown spots near the center. As the bulbs grow larger, each stalk may produce up to five flowers. All of our plants are nursery-propagated via division. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #05392

Lilium 'Moonyeen' (Moonyeen Martagon Lily)

NEW! This vigorous Martagon lily hybrid (Tarlton 1988) makes a 3' tall stalk of whorled leaves, topped in late May - June (NC) with spikes of up to a dozen pendent flowers, each light pink with darker spots...great to blend with ferns in the woodland garden. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #08559

Lilium 'Pink Perfection' (Pink Perfection Lily)

Lilium 'Pink Perfection' (Pink Perfection Lily)

SunZone: 3-8 72" tall Origin: Hybrid
This stunning seed strain, derived from L. sargentiae, is one of the best lilies we have grown in our fairly lily-deprived southern climate. L. 'Pink Perfection' makes a stunning 6' tall clump, topped in mid-June with 7-15 huge lavender buds that open to even larger, obscenely fragrant lavender flowers. Notice, I said lavender, not pink...damn color-blind horticulturists. Each flower is highlighted by large globs of bright orange pollen on the anthers...absolutely a gem of a plant. Martha Stewart's website describes this as, "one of Martha's favorite lilies." It's a really good thing! Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #07084

Lilium pyrophilum (Sandhills Fire Lily)

Lilium pyrophilum (Sandhills Fire Lily)

Sun to Part SunZone: 5-9 48" tall Origin: USA
This recently named lily, found sporadically in 16 counties in NC/Virginia, was first thought to be a disjunct population of the federally endangered L. iridollae and at times considered as both L. superbum and L. michauxii. After exhaustive analysis, it was christened a new species, L. pyrophilum. This long-leaf pine habitat endemic is found in full sun, growing in sandy pitcher plant bogs. L. pyrophilum grows from an unusual horizontally expanding, branched rhizome, giving rise to 4' tall stems clothed with narrow, glossy green leaves. The stems are topped in mid-July (slightly later and smaller than L. superbum) with 5-7 large, pendent, orange flowers with a yellow throat and abundant, dark brown spots. As a summer butterfly magnet, it rivals Joe-Pye weed. Our plants are nursery-propagated from a single clone. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #06779

Lilium rosthornii (Rosthorn's Lily)

Lilium rosthornii (Rosthorn's Lily)

Sun to Part SunZone: 5-8, at least 36" tall Origin: China
Open House/Web-Only! Although it was discovered in 1891, Lilium rosthornii had not been seen since 1938 and was thought to be extinct until recently, when it re-appeared with some wild collected lilies shipped from China. The plant resembles L. henryi, but each of the shorter 3' tall stalks contains three to five pendent golden-orange flowers. L. rosthornii has proven to be very easy to grow and is a perfect size for most gardens. Our offerings are seed grown plants from the gardens at PDN. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #07110

Lilium sargentiae DJHC587 (Sargent's Lily)

Lilium sargentiae DJHC587 (Sargent's Lily)

SunZone: 5-8, at least 72" tall Origin: China
This 2000 Dan Hinkley introduction comes from a collection in Southern Sichuan Province (originally sold as L. leucanthemum). These stately 6' tall lilies are topped from late June to July with huge downward-facing fragrant trumpets of pure white. The flower backs are tinged green toward the petal tips, and purple toward the back. L. sargentiae also forms a few leaf bulbils in the top foot of the stem for assistance in propagation. Although typically one-to four-flowered and reaching 3-5' in height, this form tops out at 6' for us with 5-8 flowers per stalk. L. sargentiae prefers slightly acidic soils and good winter drainage. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #08008

Lilium x marhan 'Mrs. R. O. Backhouse' (Mrs. R. O. Backhouse Lily)

Lilium x marhan 'Mrs. R. O. Backhouse' (Mrs. R. O. Backhouse Lily)

Part Sun to Light ShadeZone: 3-7 54" tall Origin: Hybrid
This lily hybrid (L. martagon x L. hansonii), winner of the Award of Garden Merit, is a 1921 introduction from England's Robert Ormston Backhouse, who liked the selection so much, he named it for his wife, Sarah Elizabeth. The 4.5' tall stalk is topped in June (NC) with lovely pendent, golden-orange flowers that are heavily speckled with purple dots. The buds emerge pink, and the pink color remains on the outside of the petals after opening. We have had very good luck growing these despite our summers. Still, moist soils and cool sites are best. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #07216

Lindernia
Lindernia grandiflora (Blue Moneywort)

Lindernia grandiflora (Blue Moneywort)

Sun to Light ShadeZone: 7-10, at least 1" tall Origin: USA
Open House/Web-Only! (syn: Ilysanthes grandiflora) This deciduous Southeast US native is a newcomer to most perennial gardens. With rave reviews from visitors to our garden, we figured we should share. Blue moneywort (a member of the Scrophularia family) grows like regular moneywort, with 1/2" heart-shaped leaves creeping along the ground. From each node arises a tiny, cute blue flower with a star-like white marking in the center. Flowering occurs from spring through summer. Blue moneywort has been hardy to 0 degrees F in our garden and has been happiest in moist soils. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #01703

Liriope (Lilyturf)
Despite being one of the most ubiquitous plants in the American landscape, gardeners have only tapped the surface of this amazing group of this tough as nails member of the lily family. We strive to offer some of the more fascinating and unusual forms and species that we have found, both from our expeditions and from breeders worldwide.
Liriope muscari 'Okina' (Frosted Monkey Grass)

Liriope muscari 'Okina' (Frosted Monkey Grass)

Sun to ShadeZone: 6-10 10" tall Origin: China    alternate image
This very cool selection of the clumping monkey grass came to us from famed Japanese nurseryman Akira Shibamichi. In the spring, the top 75% of each leaf is pure white. As the plant matures, the white becomes speckled with green flecks, eventually changing to all green by fall (the coloration will hold better in cooler climates). In late summer, the clumps are topped with the typical stalks of lilac flowers. L. 'Okina' is truly a stunning plant that will stop visitors in their tracks! Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #03542

Liriope muscari 'Peedee Ingot' (Golden Monkey Grass)

Liriope muscari 'Peedee Ingot' (Golden Monkey Grass)

Sun to ShadeZone: 6-10 10" tall Origin: China, Japan, Taiwan
Wow! This has long been one of my favorite perennials, but there has never been enough to share with the rest of the gardening world...until now! From South Carolina's own Ursula Herz comes this clumping monkey grass with wonderful chartreuse-golden foliage (brightest after the new foliage emerges). We like to use this as a golden accent in the dark woodland parts of our garden. In late summer, the clumps are topped with typical 1' tall spikes of lilac-lavender flowers. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #03096
