Trillium (Toad-shade, Wake Robin)
While we get lots of requests for these mostly US natives, the supply of nursery-propagated, seed-grown plants is simply not large enough to reach the numbers needed to be listed in the catalog. We are very pleased this year to offer a small selection of nursery-propagated plants while they last. These easy-to-grow, woodland, spring ephemerals are a worldwide favorite, and they seem to exude a magical feeling when they blossom in the spring garden.
Trillium erectum (Wake-robin Trillium)

Trillium erectum (Wake-robin Trillium)

Part Sun to ShadeZone: 2-8 10" tall Origin: USA
Web-Only! New crop available 10-2-2008 The stunning Trillium erectum occurs in rich, moist woodlands from Canada south to Georgia. T. erectum emerges in mid-April (NC), forming a 6" tall stalk, topped with three green leaves. Soon after the leaves unfurl, the bright red, quarter sized flowers pop up from under the leaf to stand perched atop the green foliage. In time, T. erectum makes a stunning large clump in the woodland garden. These plants were propagated from a population in Avery County, NC. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #03493

Trillium foetidissimum (Foetid Trillium)

Trillium foetidissimum (Foetid Trillium)

Light ShadeZone: 5-9, at least 10" tall Origin: USA
Despite being endemic to only a small region of beech forests and floodplains on both the LA and MS sides of the Mississippi River, T. foetidissimum is as hardy in MN. The amazing sessile trillium sprouts a 10" stalk in early spring, topped first with three olive-green leaves, dramatically highlighted with dark blotches. Atop the leaves are the narrow, maroon-red petals. T. foetidissimum is extremely easy to grow in a wide range of garden conditions. Our offering represents 5-year-old flowering-sized plants, grown from hand-pollinated seedlings here at PDN. The original parent clone for this offereing was collected outside Baton Rouge, LA. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #07103

Trillium lancifolium coll. #A1NC-059 (Lance Leaf Trillium)

Trillium lancifolium coll. #A1NC-059 (Lance Leaf Trillium)

Light Shade to ShadeZone: 5-9, at least 6" tall Origin: USA
In 1998, we found this fast-multiplying form of Trillium lancifolium in Whitfield, GA, growing in a flooded, poison ivy-covered waste area behind a truck stop. We were able to secure a few divisions from the main clump and, finally, have enough flowering-sized seedlings to share. For us, this is one of the earliest, cutest, and also one of the smallest trilliums. The narrow, grey-green foliage is heavily speckled purple and topped by a typical liver-colored flower in late March and April in NC. This has proven to be very easy to grow in a dry woodland and quickly makes a wonderful clump. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #05611

Trillium maculatum coll. #A1NC-071 (Spotted Trillium)

Trillium maculatum coll. #A1NC-071 (Spotted Trillium)

Light ShadeZone: 5-9 12" tall Origin: USA
This offering of the southeast native, Trillium maculatum, comes via PDN grown seed from an original plant collected from a logged-over floodplain near the northern end of its range in Edgefield County, SC. In the garden, these have been particularly vigorous and have developed nice offsetting clumps...very stunning in the spring garden. The olive-green foliage is nicely marked with liver-purple speckles, topped in early spring with upright purple petals. Moist soils are best, although T. maculatum is quite drought tolerant when dormant. These are all flowering-sized plants and are 4-5 years old from seed. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #06471

Trillium underwoodii (Underwood's Trillium)

Trillium underwoodii (Underwood's Trillium)

Part Sun to Light ShadeZone: 5-9 8" tall Origin: USA
This is a stunning southeast native trillium from the dry deciduous forests of the Deep South region including AL, GA, and the Panhandle of FL. Despite this range, it has remarkable hardiness. The stunning, mottled foliage features a dark, medium, and light green checkerboard pattern with a silver streak down the center of each leaf. Emerging in February and March, each petiole is topped with a dark purple flower to 1" tall, contrasting nicely with the foliage. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #02973

Trithrinax
Trithrinax campestris (Argentine Silver Palm)

Trithrinax campestris (Argentine Silver Palm)

SunZone: 8-10, at least 144" tall Origin: Argentina
Web-Only! I'll never forget the day I first saw these palms growing in open savannas in Northern Argentina...certainly the most beautiful palms I'd ever seen. The slow-growing trunks eventually reach 12' tall, clothed in very stiff leaves that ranged from grey to the most beautiful silver-grey you can imagine. We are pleased to offer 2-year-old seedlings for those looking to experiment. I expect them to show very good cold tolerance, but the key to winter survival in colder zones is to keep the plants dry since they are natives of dry desert regions. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #05602

Typhonium
Typhonium roxburghii (Dwarf Voodoo Lily)

Typhonium roxburghii (Dwarf Voodoo Lily)

Part Sun to ShadeZone: 7-10 12" tall Origin: Tropical Asia
Web-Only! (syn: T. blumei) "Honey...I shrunk the amorphophallus." Thanks to Jim Waddick for sharing this stunning and easy-to-grow little aroid that is completely unknown to all but the most devout plant geeks. The glossy green, hastate-shaped leaves emerge in June to make a small, 1' tall (with age) x 1' wide clump. After the leaves emerge, the clump begins producing flowers like a limp, dwarf Amorphophallus konjac, with an equally interesting aroma. This is a great specimen subject for the woodland garden. If you have neighbors that you hate, plant one near their open window for a great laugh! We previously offered this under the incorrect name of T. divaricatum. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #02535

Ulmus
Ulmus parvifolia 'Variegata' (Speckled Lacebark Elm)

Ulmus parvifolia 'Variegata' (Speckled Lacebark Elm)

SunZone: 5-8 360" tall Origin: China, Japan, Korea
Web-Only! This treasure is certainly the most asked-about tree at our Spring Open House. The first plant released (1qt) in Fall 2004 sold at the International Plant Propagators meeting for $140. This small/medium tree is adorned with small leaves, heavily speckled with white and dark green. We have found the growth rate to be between 4' and 6' per year when the plant is established and actively growing. As the plants age, the bark begins to peel, revealing a beautiful underlying tan-and-brown color pattern. The mature height should be in the range of 30' with a similar spread. We grow this from seed, so each plant is slightly different. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #05866

Uvularia (Bellwort)
These cute little woodland natives have been overlooked during the "bigger-is-better" gardening fad. With gardens becoming smaller, along with the "back to nature" movement, folks are rediscovering these delightful members of the lily family. These woodland natives are great blending plants to mix with ferns and hostas. Their primary floral show is in early spring, although the structural foliage remains for the rest of the season.
Uvularia sessilifolia 'Cobblewood Gold' (Gold Edge Bellwort)

Uvularia sessilifolia 'Cobblewood Gold' (Gold Edge Bellwort)

Light Shade to ShadeZone: 4-9 8" tall Origin: USA
Web-Only! Here is a neat new selection of an old East Coast native, discovered by plantsman Darrell Probst in a patch of woods in western MA. In early spring, the tiny stalks of this lily emerge from a short underground rhizome. The wiry, 8" tall stems are clothed with small green leaves, each with a delightful golden border. Each stem ends with a small, yellow, bell-shaped flower in early spring. In 10 years, expect a 2' wide mass of stems...great for a special spot in the woodland garden! Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #03100
