Salvia (Sage)
What a great bunch of plants! Thanks to the efforts of Richard Dufresne of Greensboro, NC, and John Fairey and Carl Schoenfeld of Yucca Do Nursery of Waller, TX, salvias have taken a remarkable turn for the better. We will bring you the latest and the best of new perennial salvias, many from the southwest US and mountain regions of Mexico. If you think of salvias as little red things in your annual beds...think again. Salvias as a group prefer full bright sun and well-drained soils. On many of the marginally hardy salvias, we recommend that they not be cut back until early spring, since water will fill cut branches and freeze during the winter.
Salvia guaranitica 'Argentina Skies' (Argentina Skies Anise Sage)

Salvia guaranitica 'Argentina Skies' (Argentina Skies Anise Sage)

Sun to Part SunZone: 6-10 60" tall Origin: Argentina
Web-Only! This Charles Cresson selection of S. guaranitica is dramatically different from the normal species. The tall plant is topped, from midsummer until fall, with hundreds of tubular sky-blue flowers (RHS 97A)...not the dark blue, which is more typical. This vigorous selection also is somewhat stoloniferous although it doesn't run far. S. 'Argentina Skies' is an easy-to-grow addition to the cooler parts of the perennial border. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #00809

Salvia guaranitica 'Black and Blue' (Domestic Violence Anise Sage)

Salvia guaranitica 'Black and Blue' (Domestic Violence Anise Sage)

Sun to Part SunZone: 7-10 36" tall Origin: Brazil
Emerging from dormancy in early spring, the 3' tall clumps are clothed in fuzzy green, spade-shaped leaves. From midsummer through fall, the clumps are topped with 1' spikes of narrow, long, snapdragon-like, luscious, deep blue flowers. This selection of the hardy anise sage differs from the norm in that the calyx (the little cup that holds the open flower) is black instead of the usual green. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #02016

Salvia koyamae (Japanese Yellow Sage)

Salvia koyamae (Japanese Yellow Sage)

Part Sun to Light ShadeZone: 4b-10 24" tall Origin: Japan
This fabulous little salvia from Japan has large, hairy, green foliage that makes a spectacular bold effect in the garden. While S. koyamae will grow in the sun, it prefers a shady woodland setting. The 3' wide clumps are adorned with soft, yellow flowers from late summer through fall...great in a mass planting! Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #01269

Salvia leucantha (Mexican Bush Sage)

Salvia leucantha (Mexican Bush Sage)

Sun to Part SunZone: 7b-10 40" tall Origin: Mexico
The Mexican bush sage is so wonderful that northern gardeners grow it as a prized annual. Fortunately for us, it is hardy in the warmer parts of Zone 7...reliable for us to 0 degrees F. I still recommend early establishment in Zone 7, and no cutting back until spring. The hairy leaves clothe the upright stems that are topped with spectacular purple-and-white velvety flowers from late summer until frost in the fall...great for an accent in the back of the border or in a vase! Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #00996

Salvia leucantha 'Midnight' (Mexican Bush Sage)

Salvia leucantha 'Midnight' (Mexican Bush Sage)

Sun to Part SunZone: 7b-10 40" tall Origin: Mexico
(syn: S. l. All Purple) This is the same wonderful late summer and fall blooming salvia as S. leucantha, but instead of the white florets inside the purple calyces, the florets are also dark velvety-purple. It's hard to imagine, but visitors who see it in flower don't leave without one...another of those great flowers to fondle! Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #00929

Salvia leucantha 'Santa Barbara' PP 12,949 (Dwarf Mexican Sage)

SunZone: 8a-10, possibly colder 24" tall Origin: Mexico
This amazing introduction from CA is a breakthrough in the world of salvias. Imagine a wonderful fall-flowering S. leucantha that only reaches 2' tall, but with a spread of 3-4' in width, and you have S. 'Santa Barbara'. Whether used as a hardy perennial in the milder zones, or as a tender or container perennial in the North, the clumps are topped with spikes of fuzzy purple, with a nicely contrasting lighter purple lip, from mid-September until frost...simply dazzling. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #03841

Salvia madrensis 'Red Neck Girl' (Forsythia Sage)

Salvia madrensis 'Red Neck Girl' (Forsythia Sage)

SunZone: 7b-10 84" tall Origin: Mexico
Web-Only! You are sure to love this fun new PDN selection of the giant Salvia madrensis. In order to jazz up what are arguably some of the best stems in the perennial world, we have hand-painted each of the 7' giant winged stems dark red-violet. These colorful stems support the large, fuzzy, silvery green leaves, then beginning in late September (a month earlier than most other forms), end in large panicles of butter-yellow flowers. We are excited about taking a great plant and making it even better. We hope you appreciate all the work we went through just for you! Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #04742

Salvia 'Maraschino' (Maraschino Cherry Sage)

Salvia 'Maraschino' (Maraschino Cherry Sage)

Sun to Part SunZone: 6-10 30" tall Origin: USA Hybrid
Web-Only! This Rich Dufresne hybrid between S. grahamii and S. microphylla is the hardiest red form we have grown. The narrow green foliage persists on the woody stems until temperatures drop below the mid-teens. S. 'Maraschino' blooms heavily in the spring, sporadically in the summer, and then heavily from September through November...bright velvet-red flowers! Sorry, but the RHS doesn't have a color to match S. 'Maraschino'. The 3' wide clump prefers a location that is well- drained, especially during the winter months. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #00999

Salvia microphylla 'Hot Lips' (Hot Lips Sage)

Salvia microphylla 'Hot Lips' (Hot Lips Sage)

SunZone: 7-9 30" tall Origin: Mexico
Outrageously cool! This wild selection of the Mexican Salvia microphylla was introduced by Richard Turner of CA after the plant was shared with him by his maid, who brought it from her home in Mexico. The fast-growing, 30" tall x 6' wide clump is adorned with stunning bicolor flowers with red tips and white lips. When the nights warm in summer, the new flowers are all red with an occasional solid white one. As fall approaches, the flowers again will be bicolor red and white. Even if your school colors aren't red and white, this is truly a "must-have" salvia! Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #05424

Salvia microphylla 'La Trinidad Pink' (La Trinidad Pink Sage)

Salvia microphylla 'La Trinidad Pink' (La Trinidad Pink Sage)

SunZone: 7-9a 24" tall Origin: Mexico
Web-Only! Houston...we have a problem. Due to a mix-up many years ago in a nursery far, far away, two salvias swapped their tags. We have only recently discovered the wonderful salvia we offered prior to 2003 as S. 'San Carlos Festival' was actually this plant. This Yucca Do introduction from Mexico makes a 2' tall x 3' wide clump smothered in spring and again in fall with hundreds of red-violet (RHS 57B) flowers. The flowers are larger and lighter in color than the true S. 'San Carlos Festival'. We apologize for the error. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #05443

The clump is adorned with hundreds of red-violet (RHS 66A) flowers from early May through November here in NC...superb! Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #00185
