Cardiocrinum giganteum var. yunnanense is part of the variable Cardiocrinum giganteum complex. It's hard to give definitive differences between var. yunnanense and var. giganteum, but, as a general rule, Cardiocrinum giganteum var. yunnanense grows taller (to 10-12' tall) and has more open flowers with more purple markings. Cardiocrinum giganteum var. yunnanense is native from as low as 4,000' to as high as 13,000' elevation throughout Yunnan, China, and surrounding provinces. As with all cardiocrinums, it usually takes about 7 years to reach flowering size, and in the meantime you will have to be satisfied with the large, glossy, green, red-veined, basal foliage. After flowering, small offset bulbs and lots of seed start the 7-year process over again.
