Amsonia is a genus of mostly native plants. These perennial wildflowers attract butterflies, and are deer-resistant, sun-loving plants prized for their drought tolerance and true blue flowers. Not only are Amsonia species themselves superb, but many of the newer amsonia (bluestar) hybrids could become garden staples. Amsonia hubrichtii was named the 2011 Perennial Plant of the Year by the Perennial Plant Association for its delicate texture, blue flowers and fantastic yellow fall foliage. Amsonia hubrichtii has long been one of our favorites too.

Amsonia is a tough, easy to grow, deer-resistant, full sun perennial that tolerates a variety of garden soils. Amsonia looks great grown in a large drift but also makes a wonderful backdrop or companion plant for other garden species. When you are ready to buy amsonia for your garden, check out our list of bluestar for sale below.

Available 6-20-2013(aka: Amsonia WFF form) Amsonia 'Blue Ice' is an amazing selection of blue star that was discovered in a seedling block of A. tabernaemontana at Connecticut's Sunny Border Nursery by Michael Dodge, then of White Flower Farm. (We suspect it is actually a hybrid with Amsonia montana or Amsonia orientalis but a paternity test is still pending.) Regardless of its origin, the 2' wide mound of narrow, dark green, deer-resistant foliage is topped in early spring with large clusters of very dark lavender-blue flowers...much more vivid than other blue stars. For us Amsonia 'Blue Ice' has been an amazingly vigorous plant, lending credence to a hybrid origin...a superb introduction for the spring garden. Pot Size: 3.5" (24 fl. oz/709.77 ml)
Sold Out PlantAmsonia hubrichtii is a North American native plant that was discovered in 1942 in Arkansas by Leslie Hubricht and named in his honor. Amsonia hubrichtii sports the narrowest, laciest, most threadlike foliage of any upright blue star species. Introduced into cultivation by Woodlanders Nursery, this fine southern native is truly the best of the blue stars. The sky blue flowers of Amsonia hubrichtii emerge atop the 3' tall x 4' wide clump when it breaks the ground in April and continue into May. In autumn, the deciduous golden foliage is stunning...a great fall-foliage plant! Pot Size: 3.5" (24 fl. oz/709.77 ml)
We love blue stars, and we are particularly excited to have introduced this one in 2003 that is smaller and better-suited to spatially challenged gardeners...even suitable to most rock gardens. We selected this cutie from a batch of seedlings we grew in the late '80s. Of all the seedlings, Amsonia 'Short Stack' was the shortest and had the best form. Amsonia 'Short Stack' was planted in our display beds where its dwarf, 10" tall x 18" wide, perfectly rounded form has been superb. The clean, dark green, deer-resistant foliage contrasts nicely with the medium sky-blue flowers that top the plant in early spring...a real winner! Pot Size: 3.5" (24 fl. oz/709.77 ml)
