Zone: 6b to 8b,at least

Height: 12" tall

Culture: Sun

Origin: South Africa

Pot Size: 3.5" pot (24 fl. oz/0.7 L)

$15.00
Eucomis autumnalis 'Naude's Neck' is an unusual form of the South African native pineapple lily, Eucomis autumnalis, that we saw on our 2005 trek near Naude's Neck in the Drakensberg Mountains. Thanks to Silverhill Seeds for making seed available. For us, Eucomis autumnalis 'Naude's Neck' forms a rather flat rosette of 1' long glossy green leaves topped, starting in early July (NC), with dense pineapple-like spikes of bright green flowers. What amazes us most about Eucomis autumnalis 'Naude's Neck' is its compactness, floriferousness, and that the flower stalks remain sturdy and attractive until frost, unlike any other eucomis we've grown.

Eucomis 'Dark Star' (Dark Star Pineapple Lily) #5032

Zone: 7a to 9b,at least

Height: 10" tall

Culture: Sun

Origin: Hybrid

Pot Size: 3.5" pot (24 fl. oz/0.7 L)

$15.00
Eucomis 'Dark Star' is the latest Terra Nova hybrid involving the dwarf Eucomis zambesiaca and Eucomis vandermerwei. The result is one of the most amazing dwarf pineapple lilies that we've ever seen. Eucomis 'Dark Star' is aptly named as it truly resembles dwarf purple stars in the garden. The tiny 10" tall x 14" wide clump of narrow, dark purple fleshy leaves splay out at ground level and are topped with a short 10" spike of pinkish pineapple-like flowers in midsummer...sooo cool!

Eucomis 'Freckles' PP 22,769 (Freckles Pineapple Lily) #9600

Zone: 7b to 10b,at least

Height: 10" tall

Culture: Sun to Part Sun

Origin: Hybrid

Pot Size: 3.5" pot (24 fl. oz/0.7 L)

$15.00
Eucomis 'Freckles' is a 2010 Terra Nova release, developed from a cross of Eucomis 'Leia' (E. zambesiaca x E. vandermerwei) backcrossed with Eucomis vandermerwei. In appearance, Eucomis 'Freckles' appears to be a larger, more vigorous Eucomis vandermerwei. The 10" tall x 14" wide clump is composed of very dark green leaves, heavily speckled purple. In July, the clumps are topped with short, 10" tall spikes of dark purple flowers. Eucomis 'Freckles' makes a great specimen plant and also looks great in a mass planting.

Eucomis humilis (Dwarf Wide-leaf Pineapple Lily) #7282

Zone: 7b to 10b,at least

Height: 15" tall

Culture: Sun to Part Sun

Origin: South Africa

Pot Size: 3.5" pot (24 fl. oz/0.7 L)

Eucomis humilis is one of several amazing species of pineapple lily from the high elevation Drakensberg mountains of South Africa. Eucomis humilis can be found growing in alpine streams and in subsurface water-fed grasslands. In the garden, however, Eucomis humilis is amazingly drought tolerant. Eucomis humilis has the widest leaves of any of the eucomis species, typically measuring 4" at the widest point. The 15" tall x 18" wide clumps are composed of green leaves, held out and upward, showing off the incredible red-purple patterning of the leaf base. In August, the clumps are topped with 18" tall, thick scapes of small white flowers.

Eucomis 'Leia' (Leia Pineapple Lily) #9796

Zone: 7a to 10b,

Height: 10" tall

Culture: Sun

Origin: South Africa

Pot Size: 3.5" pot (24 fl. oz/0.7 L)

$15.00
Eucomis 'Leia' was the first in the recent hybridizing efforts for short, compact pineapple lilies. Eucomis 'Leia' comes from Garden State Bulb Growers and I agree with Dr. John Grimshaw who assumes it to be a hybrid between Eucomis zambesiaca and Eucomis vandermerwei. The fast-offsetting rosettes eventually form a 15" wide compact clump topped, starting in early July, with 10" spikes of dark pink-lavender buds, opening to equally saturated flowers. Eucomis 'Leia' is a truly stunning breakthrough in pineapple lily breeding.

Eucomis 'Mini Tuft Bright Pink' (Mini Tuft Bright Pink Pineapple Lily) #9938

Zone: 7a to 10b,

Height: 10" tall

Culture: Sun

Origin: South Africa

Pot Size: 3.5" pot (24 fl. oz/0.7 L)

$15.00
Eucomis 'Mini Tuft Bright Pink' is another in the line of dwarf pineapple lilies from New Zealand's Ian Duncalfe, developed by crossing Eucomis vandermerwei and Eucomis zambesiaca. The compact dusty purple foliage makes a 10" tall x 15" wide clump topped, starting in late June (NC), with 10" tall spikes of lovely pink-lavender flowers. Although Mini Tuft was intended to be the trademark name of the series, each clone was not given a proper cultivar name according to the International Nomenclature Code, so we made the trade name part of the cultivar to make the name valid.

Eucomis 'Mini Tuft Cherry Blossom' (Mini Tuft Cherry Blossom Pineapple Lily) #9940

Zone: 7a to 10b,

Height: 10" tall

Culture: Sun

Origin: South Africa

Pot Size: 3.5" pot (24 fl. oz/0.7 L)

Eucomis 'Mini Tuft Cherry Blossom' is an Ian Duncalfe hybrid that forms a compact, fast-growing clump of shiny green, heavily ruffled leaves topped, starting in late June (NC), with 10" tall stalks of pure white flowers.

Eucomis 'Mini Tuft Pink' (Mini Tuft Pink Pineapple Lily) #9939

Zone: 7a to 10b,

Eucomis 'Mini Tuft Pink' from New Zealand's Ian Duncalfe, forms a compact, fast-multiplying clump of dusty purple foliage, topped, starting in late June (NC), with 10" flower spikes of flowers that open cream and quickly change to a dark cerise-pink.

Eucomis 'Mini Tuft Red' (Mini Tuft Red Pineapple Lily) #9936

Height: 10" tall

Culture: Sun

Origin: South Africa

Pot Size: 3.5" pot (24 fl. oz/0.7 L)

Despite the name, Eucomis 'Mini Tuft Red' is anything but red. This wonderful dwarf Ian Duncalfe hybrid of Eucomis vandermerwei and Eucomis zambesiaca produces compact rosettes of very wavy green leaves. Clumps of Eucomis 'Mini Tuft Red' are topped, starting in late June (NC), with 10" spikes of dark wine-purple flowers...very attractive.

Eucomis 'Sparkling Burgundy' (Sparkling Burgundy Purple Pineapple Lily) #1796

Height: 20" tall

Culture: Sun

Origin: South Africa

Pot Size: 3.5" pot (24 fl. oz/0.7 L)

$15.00
We selected this dramatic, purple-foliaged pineapple lily as a seedling in 1983, and it has now become one of the most talked-about plants in our garden. This dramatic accent plant produces strap-like foliage of dark burgundy forming a rosette to 24" wide. In late summer, the clump produces a 20" tall bloom stalk resembling a miniature purple pineapple...very cool! Eucomis 'Sparkling Burgundy' is very easy to grow and tolerates a wide range of garden abuses. In cooler climates, it makes a great color-bowl combo plant!

Eucomis 'Twinkle Stars' PP 20,350 (Twinkle Stars Pineapple Lily) #9246

Zone: 6b to 9b,

Height: 24" tall

Culture: Sun

Pot Size: 3.5" pot (24 fl. oz/0.7 L)

Eucomis 'Twinkle Stars' is the latest in the parade of new pineapple lilies, this one from breeder, Terry Hatch, of Joy Nurseries in New Zealand. Eucomis 'Twinkle Stars' forms 16" tall rosettes of fleshy green foliage topped, starting in mid-July (NC), with 2' tall purple spikes with equally dark purple buds that open to light purple flowers...quite striking!

Eucomis vandermerwei 'Octopus' (Octopus Dwarf Pineapple Lily) #7708

Zone: 7a to 8b,guessing

Height: 6" tall

Culture: Sun to Part Sun

Origin: South Africa

Pot Size: 3.5" pot (24 fl. oz/0.7 L)

$15.00
The rare Eucomis vandermerwei is native only to the small, high rainfall region in the Northern Drakensberg Mountains (Steenkampsberg range) just east of Pretoria, South Africa. In the wild, Eucomis vandermerwei are found in well-drained rocky crevices, free from winter moisture. In the garden, the dwarf Eucomis vandermerwei makes a wonderful 6" tall x 1' wide rock garden plant. Eucomis 'Octopus' is a vigorous selection with narrow, ground-hugging green leaves, heavily specked with dark purple. The dark purple, mini pineapple-looking flowers top the foliage starting in July...just darling. If kept dry when dormant, these should prove to be quite winter-hardy, although they don't re-emerge before June in NC.
