Bergeranthus katbergensis, first cousin to the better known delosperma ice plants, hails from the interior mountains of South Africa's Eastern Cape province. Our clonal offering was seed grown from the Cathcart region, where we saw it growing in grasslands at 4,500' elevation during our 2005 expedition. In the garden, Bergeranthus katbergensis 'Cathcart' makes a very tight 1" tall x 6" wide mound of fleshy, pointed, green succulent leaves that are topped in very early spring with a smothering procession of 3" tall stalks of bright yellow daisies. We have found Bergeranthus katbergensis very easy to grow in the rock garden as long as soils are well-drained and fairly dry in the winter months.
