More Information About Arundo

Arundo is a genus of extremely tall reed grasses native to Europe and Asia, some of which can grow up to 30' in their native habitats. Garden variety arundo selections do not get quite that large, but are still best suited for the back of the border.

Arundo plants prefer moist soils but, like most ornamental grasses, grow well in almost any soil type including clay soils and very lean soils. Arundo prefer plenty of water but will grow fine in drier conditions and will tolerate saline coastal environments. These ornamental grasses grow best in full sun and will spread into an attractive, dense patch in just a few years. Arundo species have fibers rich in silicon which makes them unpalatable to deer, rabbits, and insects. They are tough, low maintenance plants which makes them perfect for rain gardens.

In addition to their value as ornamental grasses, Arundo species also have a wide variety of economic uses. For those of you who played a woodwind instrument in school, Arundo donax was the source of your reeds. In addition, the hollow reeds have been used to make reed flutes, pan flutes (does anyone remember Zamfir?), fishing poles and walking sticks. Arundo species are currently being studied as source plants for the paper and cellulosic ethanol industries, as fuel sources for heaters and as phytoremediation plants that can clean soil and groundwater of arsenic, cadmium, and lead. In California and Hawaii, Arundo plants spread rapidly, especially in riparian areas, but arundo ornamental grass is well-behaved in the Southeast. When you are ready to buy arundo for your sun garden, check out our online offerings of arundo for sale.

Perennial ornamental grasses are real work-horses in the garden. They are tough, easy to grow, and provide a vertical or arching structure with year-round interest. There are many varieties of ornamental grass for sale, including variegated grasses, grasses with blue, purple, or yellow leaves and grasses with ornamental seed heads. Gardeners looking to buy ornamental grasses can find a wide variety for sale here at Plant Delights Nursery. We specialize in producing new and hard-to-find ornamental grasses.
