Aruncus dioicus var. kamtschaticus is a widespread species in Japan, but this accession came from central Hokkaido at 2,000' elevation thanks to our plant explorer friend Tom Mitchell, who discovered it fraternizing in the wild with Cardiocrinum cordatum. Aruncus dioicus var. kamtschaticus is an amazing plant, producing a 4' tall stalk of pinnate boxelder-like foliage and topped with wispy astilbe-like plumes of white...quite lovely. Moist, well-drained woodland soils are best. Aruncus dioicus was named as one of the top 200 plants of the last 200 years by the Royal Horticultural Society...quite an honor.
